Hi, let me introduce us. My name is Gary and my wife, Anita. We started cruising in the early 1980’s and after our first cruise we were hooked. We have now passed our 100th cruise this year since we started. Our first ship was on the Chandris Cruise Line which later became Celebrity Cruise Line. We had an inside cabin for a Monday to Friday cruise that cost about $550 then. That was the times of midnight buffets, sitting at a large table and making new friends. You paid your tips in cash at the end of the cruise to your waiter, busboy and room steward. No drink packages, just about $2.00 a drink then. The only specialty dining was the steakhouse. You could drive a golf ball off the rear of the ship and skeet shooting on the side of the ship. Those were the days.

In over 45 years that we have been cruising we have experienced seven different lines, Chandris, Carnival, NCL, RCCL, Princess, Celebrity and Virgin Voyages. We found each cruise line has its own personality. Some cruise lines are family oriented with water slides, go cart racetracks; some are more port intensive; some make the ship the destination, some more resort like and now there are two with no children under 18. Destinations are limited to the 7 continents. The oceans are large my friends. We have cruised to almost every Caribbean Country, several Central & S. America Countries, went thru both Panama Canals. We have been to Alaska three times, Fall Foliage cruise: N.Y. to Halifax and Europe staying in Rome to see the sites. We have even been to China on a land tour. Personally, I would love to sail to the South Pole and see Penguins by the thousands in their natural habitat. You can cruise up or down the Amazon River and River cruises throughout Europe. How about a train journey in India, Japan, Europe, Canada and South America. Thinking about an all-inclusive land vacation? I can arrange that too.

Some of Our Favorite Destinations and What We Like to Do There:

We love going to St. Maartin. This Island is occupied by two different countries: The Netherlands and France. There are no fenced borders or passports checked when you go from one side to the other. Only a sign in the road that you're in the other country. How civilized. We take a cab or van and go to Maho Beach and watch the planes land just a few feet over our head and feel the thrust of jet engines as your hat goes flying off your head as you watch them takeoff. Sometimes we sit at the bar their instead and enjoy a beer with lunch and watch the planes too. Other times we take the ferry from the port and go to the boardwalk. There you can also rent lounge chairs with a large umbrella on the beach and just watch the waves come in. There’s plenty of shopping there too and even a few scattered small casinos. When we go to the French side we will go to a bakery and have croissants and coffee like we did in France. The shopping is nice as well as their beaches.

If you want to shop for Jewelry St. Thomas is the Island for you. Besides all the usual chain stores on every island, there are so many family-owned ones too. That’s where we shop for years because you can bargain better with the owners. If you arrive on a RC or Celebrity ship your port is different than the other cruise lines. It is smaller with only a few shops and a short ride to the downtown shopping area. All the other cruise lines like Carnival, NCL, Princess, Virgin Voyages and Holland America stop at the main cruise port. Here you can walk to a warehouse complex of several buildings filled with souvenirs, clothing, jewelry, cameras, liquor stores and restaurants just to name a few. There are rest rooms scattered around, and some places offer free Wi-Fi. Yes, there’s even a U.S. Post Office there because you are in The U.S. Virgin Islands. You can rent a car for your own tour of the island or take a taxi here to go downtown to the main shopping areas. Hint: Prices are a little cheaper downtown instead of shopping in either of the two ports. Much bigger variety of stores and restaurants too. Let’s not forget about island tours, beaches, skin diving and snorkeling which is fabulous here.

Do you like to Scuba Dive, Go Snorkeling, Just Relax on the Beach, Shopping, or Take an Island Tour? Then Cozumel has it all. This is one of our first ports that we ever visited in the 80’s and still go here. It hasn’t changed much. There are many dive boats that can take you out to the coral reefs. Take a taxi into the town for shopping and lunch in one of the many Authentic Mexican Restaurants. We have rented private vans for 4 to 12 people for a 4-hour tour of the island with a driver and guide for less than what the taxi companies or cruise ships charge. Ask me how.
